Bottom feeder fish name11/16/2023 Lake sturgeon reproduce by swimming around each other in circles and shaking violently the male stops circling when he has released his fertilizer and the female then lays her eggs. They prefer to spawn in temperatures between 55 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit. These sturgeon spawn on clean, gravel shoals and stream rapids, usually from April to June. Females reach sexual maturity at 14 to 33 years, most often from 24 to 26 years of age. Male lake sturgeon typically reach sexual maturity at 8 to 12 years, but may take up to 22 years. The juveniles can be found in the same habitats as adults after a year. It is thought that during late summer, yearlings gather in large schools in shallow river mouths and bays. They are thought to feed on benthic invertebrates like adults. About two weeks after hatching, they disperse downstream with the current for several miles until settling back down upon the river bottom.Īs juveniles, all definitive adult structures, except for gonads, form. The larvae soon become pelagic, remaining far from the surface and bed, and negatively phototactic, or attracted to darkness, while searching for rocky places to hide. Observations suggest lake sturgeon and other fish and invertebrates likely consume some fertilized eggs while on the spawning grounds.Īt hatching, the larvae are barely discernible and are about 10 mm long. The eggs typically hatch after 8 to 14 days. When the eggs are mature, they become olive green, grey or black. Lake sturgeon eggs begin yellowed and are attached to a fatty ovarian mass. They grow quickly during a lengthy juvenile stage. Males typically live for 55 years and females can live for 80 to 150 years. The abundance of prey also plays a large factor in finding a suitable habitat. They are not often far from suitable spawning locations. Juveniles typically inhabit pools greater than about 6 feet in depth, and adults typically live deep in large lakes. These sturgeon often migrate in search of food or suitable spawning locations, or in response to seasonal environmental conditions. This distribution makes sense in that all these areas were linked by the large lakes that formed as the glaciers retreated from North America at the end of the last ice age (e.g., Lake Agassiz, Lake Iroquois). In the east, the species lives in Lake Champlain and in some Vermont rivers, including the Winooski, Lamoille and Missisquoi rivers, and Otter Creek. In the north, it is found in the Hudson Bay Lowland. In the west, it reaches Lake Winnipeg and the North Saskatchewan and South Saskatchewan Rivers. Lawrence River to the limits of fresh water. It occurs in the Great Lakes and the Detroit River, east down the St. This species occurs in the Mississippi River drainage basin south to Alabama and Mississippi. Given that it is a large species surviving by feeding on very small species, its feeding ecology has been compared to that of large marine animals, like some whales, which survive by filter-feeding. Some populations consume fish as a significant component of their diet, particularly since the introduction in the early 1990s of the invasive round goby. Its diet consists of insect larvae, worms (including leeches), and other small organisms (primarily metazoan) it finds in the mud. It extends its lips to vacuum up soft live food, which it swallows whole due to its lack of teeth. The lake sturgeon has taste buds on and around its barbels near its rubbery, prehensile lips. Lake sturgeons can grow to a large size for freshwater fish, topping 7.25 ft (2.2 m) long and 240 lb (108 kg). Four sensory organs ( barbels) hang near its mouth to help the sturgeon locate bottom-dwelling prey. The lake sturgeon uses its elongated, spade-like snout to stir up the substrate and sediments on the beds of rivers and lakes to feed. Like other sturgeons, this species is a bottom feeder and has a partly cartilaginous skeleton, an overall streamlined shape, and skin bearing rows of bony plates on the sides and back. The lake sturgeon ( Acipenser fulvescens), also known as the rock sturgeon, is a North American temperate freshwater fish, one of about 25 species of sturgeon. Beet juice benefits11/16/2023 One review found beetroot supplements to have anti-inflammatory effects that could help reduce the risk for heart disease, cognitive decline, and oxidative stress from free radicals, which is linked to many chronic diseases. ( 10) This is because nitrates widen the blood vessels to improve blood flow, according to the Texas Heart Institute.Īs with other plant foods, researchers have studied beets for their potential effects on inflammation. A 2019 study and 2013 review both found that beetroot juice decreased participants’ blood pressure. The nitrate content of beets may also play an important role in blood pressure regulation. Eating more antioxidants may help reduce your risk for some cancers. Even beet greens contain beta-carotene, which is also found in carrots, spinach, and broccoli. As a general rule of thumb, the more bright-colored plant foods you include in your diet, the more antioxidants you’ll consume. ( 7, 8)Īntioxidants give vegetables like beets their bright, vibrant colors, and in the case of this food, that color is bright red. Generally speaking, beets are among the group of vegetables and fruits that may help reduce your risk for chronic illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and dementia. Their antioxidants also offer additional benefits, such as reduced risk of cellular damage. Like most other plant-based foods, beets are high in nutrients yet low in calories. The health benefits of beets are wide ranging. much earlier, and historians believe American colonists introduced them. ( 2, 3) Other types of beets were brought to the U.S. Sugar beets originated in what is now western Poland, (1) and made their way to the United States in the late 19th century as part of the rise in sugar production in California. (1) Today, this method is used with a specific subtype of beet called the sugar beet, which has a much larger root than the table beet and is white or beige in color. In the 1700s, German chemists found a way to make sugar from beets. This form of the vegetable had larger roots and smaller stalks and leaves than its ancient versions. The closest thing to the modern beet was first noted in both Germany and Italy in the late 1500s. The ancient Greeks and Romans even turned to beets for their purported aphrodisiac qualities. Ancient civilizations originally prized the leaves and stalks of beets for culinary use, and used their roots as medicine. Records suggest people in ancient Babylon, Greece, and Rome enjoyed the root veggie, and archaeologists have found evidence of their use in certain parts of North Africa as well. While beets and beet products are becoming more and more popular in the natural-foods market, the beet is anything but new. What Are Beets Exactly and What Is Their History? Airmail cocktail11/16/2023 While the domestic airmail category was officially retired by the U.S. The flavors will come through just make sure to alter the amount of simple syrup accordingly.Airmail was the au courant way to send a letter back when a cocktail was named for it several decades into the 1900s. Because of its simple and clean style, the airmail makes for a great opportunity to experiment with more complex sparkling wines. The body is impeccably crisp and refreshing, with a wine-dominant start and light notes of rum lingering after the sip. To paraphrase David Wondrich: “It’ll get you from point A to point B in a hurry.” The nose is all fruit from the lime and sparkling. It might be the ultimate brunch cocktail, as well as one of the few cocktails we would recommend with a meal, since its extra-delicate approach won’t blow your palette. The lime juice really hangs back, and the light rum takes it easy as well. It is impeccably light and delicate, with the flavors of champagne acting as the strongest in the drink. The airmail has all of the excellent qualities of a French 75. The date makes way more sense for a French 75 variation, and quite frankly, 1949 seems way too late for such a simple and delectable riff to be discovered. As for us, we’re willing to buy into the claim. That’s always a source of frustration.”Ī second interview in 2012 for Umami Mart reinforces this claim, along with the 1930’s timestamp, though you might need to go by his office for physical validation since we haven’t been able to track down an actual image of the book. Of course, you never know who really made those booklets. Now, I’ve never come across any literature from the liquor companies saying outright, “We created this,” or claiming direct authorship of these cocktails, but certainly their first printed appearance is in the booklets. With the Air Mail a lot of people are like, “Oh, it’s from here, it’s from there,” but by far the oldest I’ve gotten it back is in a Bacardi booklet. Ultimately, it wasn’t a eureka page flip, but a desperate google image search that led us to the source published in 2011, this interview with Cocktail Kingdom founder and avid Cuban pamphlet hoarder Greg Boehm seems to hold the key: “The Air Mail cocktail is originally from a Bacardi booklet. We searched high and low, both through the amazing vintage cuban cocktail books online catalog, as well as our own collection, but turned up nothing. This really blew our tops, because we had always thought of the airmail as a 50s drink from the United States. He added that the date and time rationally explains the cocktail’s name, since Cuba had just added an air mail system in 1930. Fast forward to 2015, when Douglas Ford pens an excellent piece on the airmail, claiming that it actually came from a 1930’s Bacardi promotional pamphlet published in Cuba. He added a few additional notes about the clever name, which referenced the air mail system that was both popular and futuristic for the time, and that was that. Coincidentally, he wrote those words for Esquire but that is really neither here nor there. In 2007, David Wondrich-one of the world’s premier cocktail historians-wrote that the drink was published in the 1949 Esquire book handbook for hosts. The history of the airmail has been rewritten over the last five years.

Flood factor houston11/16/2023 Rising water from Hurricane Harvey pushed thousands of people to rooftops and other higher ground. People walk through floodwater near Interstate 10 in Houston on Sunday. And local officials have defended the city’s approach to development. And the city’s drainage system - a network of reservoirs, bayous and, as a last resort, roads that hold and drain water - was not designed to handle the massive storms that are increasingly common.Ĭertainly, the record-shattering rainfall on Houston and its surrounding area this week would have wreaked havoc even if stricter building limits and better runoff systems were in place.
